The College Learning Center

Questions

How can I find out about what's going on at the College Learning Center?

Sign up for the College Learning Center listserv, and we will send you email updates regarding schedule changes, workshop announcements, special closing information, and more!

How do I know when a tutor will be available?

Schedules for all three College Learning Centers can be found in the Schedule section of this site. Simply visit a Center during the day/time that your desired subject is scheduled, and inform the front desk staff of your needs.

How do I request a tutor?

The College Learning Center offers tutoring services on a first-come, first-served basis. Simply walk-in to either Center when your preferred subject is offered and request a tutor at the front desk. If a tutor is available, you'll be able to begin immediately. If the tutor is currently meeting with another student, ask to be added to the waitlist and the staff will let the tutor know you are waiting.

Beginning Fall 2007, the Learning Center will offer math tutoring appointments for select courses. Appointment slots are pre-set for specific days and times. To make an appointment, please call 212-998-8085 for more details.

What happens during a tutoring session?

Our tutors do not deliver prepared lesson plans or lectures, nor do they write papers for tutees. Please use these tips to prepare for your tutoring session.

Is there a cost for tutoring services?

No. Services of the College Learning Center are free of charge for NYU students.

If I need more help and am willing to pay for extra tutoring outside of the Learning Center, how can I hire a private tutor?

The College Learning Center does not make arrangments for private tutoring. Students who are interested in hiring a private tutor should request assistance from the department in which the course is offered or advertise the request through the University.

Can I walk-in during the group review session times?

Yes. Group Review Sessions are offered on a walk-in basis; you do not need to sign-up in advance. In addition, individual hours are provided on a first-come first-served walk-in basis.

Will I still be able to be tutored during midterm or finals time?

Yes. In fact, during the finals period, the College Learning Center creates a Final Exam Schedule to accommodate student need prior to examinations.

Why don't you have some of the courses that I'm taking?

The courses for which we currently provide tutoring were determined based on student need as well as by what our tutors are eligible to tutor. Tutors only tutor CAS courses which they have taken in the past.

What can I do if I am busy during the times a subject is offered for tutoring?

Many of our subjects are tutored by more than one Learning Assistant, and thus the hours provide ample possibility for students to find a time that fits into their schedule. Our hours of operation, which extend into the evening, further enable students to utilize the Learning Centers services at times most convenient for them.

If I'm not in the College of Arts and Science can I still use the Learning Center?

The services of the College Learning Center are available to all students who are taking one or more College of Arts and Science courses.

Do I need to live in Weinstein or 3rd North in order to use the Learning Center?

No. The Learning Center is available for all students taking CAS courses, both residents and commuters.

If I'm doing well in class, can the Learning Center help me do even better?

Absolutely! The College Learning Center is a learning enhancement center designed to assist both students who are having difficulty in a course as well as those who are doing well but would like to further improve their performance. What better way to turn that A- to an A than by working with one of the Learning Assistants at the College Learning Center.

Can I use the Learning Center for quiet study?

Certainly. In addition to study rooms that are used for Group Review Sessions, the College Learning Center has various areas for quiet study.

How well qualified are the tutors?

Tutors undergo a stringent application and review process prior to being hired at the Learning Center. All tutors have met our academic criteria, have come highly recommended by faculty and/or administrators here at NYU, and have excelled in the courses for which they tutor. In addition, all Learning Assistants undergo training throughout the duration of their employment.
