Tutoring Tips for Students

Before Tutoring Session:

  • Prepare by reading the appropriate materials in the textbook, attempt the homework problems, etc.

  • Write down specific questions you have about the lecture, textbook, homework problems, general concepts, etc.

During Tutoring Session:

  • Come prepared. Bring your textbook, class notes, assignments, homework problems, quizzes, tests, etc. The learning assistant (tutor) can better understand your needs and help you by looking at some of your work.
  • Be honest with the learning assistant. Don’t pretend you understand if you don’t. You are not being judged or graded. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. The learning assistant can only help you when you are forthright and specific.
  • Be active, not passive. Tutoring sessions are not designed for the tutor to do your homework for you. You will learn best if you can do problems in front of the tutor and talk about your understanding of the concepts.

After Tutoring Session:

Follow up. Do the problems pertaining to the material you covered. It may also be helpful to write a summary of the session in your own words immediately afterwards. Follow the learning assistant’s instructions as a follow-up to one session and in preparation for the next.

General Suggestions:

  • Ask for help from your T.A. and/or instructor.
  • Use other free tutoring services provided by CAS departments.
  • Attend the College Learning Center's Academic Success Workshops when they are offered.
  • Expect to study at least 6-8 hours for each course per week.
  • Learn to take good lecture notes.
  • Learn to use your textbooks effectively.
  • Use old test, quizzes, and other available materials.
